Upcoming training

Our next Core Skills training session will be on Understanding Gender Based Violence and Supporting Survivors on 6th June. We then have a training session on Working Effectively with Interpreters on 13th June.   

We also have our monthly Introduction to Community Sponsorship session on 13th June, so please help us spread the word and grow Community Sponsorship by inviting anyone who might be interested!

Consultations

Some issues that Community Sponsorship groups face require very specific types of support. For example, there might be disagreements within the group around implementing boundaries, knowing the ways to support trauma, or understanding how to approach suspected domestic abuse within the family.

This is why we now offer bespoke consultation sessions which groups can access when such an issue arises. Each specialist session is tailored specifically to the needs of the group and the family they support.

The consultation can speak to what your group needs - we created a special session recently for a group who wanted to find the best way through transitioning the one-year anniversary with the family they'd welcomed. We supported them with bespoke advice and created a space so the group could reflect, consider and find solutions to the issue.

Networking events

Reset now offers UK-wide networking events for all stages of the Community Sponsorship journey. This is your opportunity to hear what other groups are doing and share your experiences.

At each networking event, you will hear the stories of one or two groups and there will be space for discussion and questions.

Our next networking event will be hosted on June 25th - please do register if you're interested in hearing the journey of a Community Sponsorship group! 

Cuppa and Collaboration

We are piloting our new and exciting drop-in event for Community Sponsorship group members, Cuppa and Collaboration. The sessions will be for group members at all stages of their journey and will focus on a specific topic related to supporting the families you welcome. 

Our next Cuppa and Collaboration session will be led by Wendy from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) who will be sharing her expertise on working with schools. Wendy will be discussing the IRC resources available for groups to access and there will be plenty of time for questions during the session. 

The IRC have a programme dedicated to supporting refugee children in schools. This programme, The Healing Classrooms Programme, “aims to support schools and educators to develop inclusive and nurturing learning spaces where refugee and asylum-seeking students can gain the necessary academic, social and emotional skills to develop their full potential.”

The IRC offer free resources to educators and schools supporting refugee and asylum-seeking students in the UK, including Being a Buddy Resource, Initial Meeting with Caregivers Guidance, and School Celebration Survey.  

What is an e-visa?

You may already be aware that the government is currently working on phasing out existing Biometric Residence Permits and transitioning to online e-visas. After December 2024, hard-copy BRPs will no longer be issued, and instead families will be provided with e-visas which they will use to prove their immigration status.

For BRP holders, the digital rollout will be done via a phased approach. You can read more about this on the following gov.uk website.

National interpreter appreciation day!

On 1st May it was National Interpreter Appreciation Day! We are grateful for all the vital work that language professionals do, especially those who are helping Community Sponsorship groups bridge communication gaps with the families that they welcome. 

Come to our training session on 13th June where you'll be equipped with the skills to effectively work with your Community Sponsorship group’s interpreter. You will learn how to navigate culture and interpreting, plan the first week of arrival, follow-up sessions, and get top tips.

We also have some useful resources on our website on good practice when working with interpreters, as well as how to brief and debrief interpreters.

Neighbours for Newcomers evaluation report

In October 2021, Reset launched the first Neighbours for Newcomers (N4N) programme as part of NHS England and NHS Improvement’s work to recruit refugee nurses. N4N was designed in partnership with Talent Beyond Boundaries, and funded by the Department of Health and Social Care to provide community-led welcome to refugee nurses arriving to work in the NHS.

In the last phase of the N4N programme, we delivered training to NHS Trusts outlining how to best support refugee nurses arriving to the UK. Roughly six months later, we interviewed seven health care assistants/refugee nurses about their experiences of the first few months of living in the UK and working for the NHS.

This evaluation report highlights key findings from the interviews which will in turn inform our future training and advice.
