What is Community Sponsorship?

Community Sponsorship is a government scheme which allows groups of volunteers in the UK to sponsor and welcome a refugee family into their community. 

As part of this, the Community Sponsorship group must find a property which the refugee family can rent. The Home Office criteria for this housing is:

• Minimum two years tenancy.
• Rent set at an affordable rate.
• Must have its own access/private entrance.

The Local Authority will inspect the property prior to a family arriving, and the local police will also check the area of the property to ensure it is suitable for a refugee family. 

How much rent can I charge?

Refugees are entitled to apply for Universal Credit and the amount that a household can receive for housing costs varies by area. You can check here what the Local Housing Allowance will be for your property. This will probably be less than the market rate so you may make a bit less money, but you’ll also get the privilege of making a real difference to the lives of people who had lost everything. Plus, you won’t need to go through an estate agency so you’ll save the agency fees.
