Who is a refugee?

Refugees are people who have fled their home countries due to the presence or threat of serious danger, such as that posed by war, conflict and persecution, and who cannot return home as a result of this danger. Those who are resettled through Community Sponsorship are recognised in the UK as refugees.

In the UK, the term 'asylum seeker' is used to describe a person who has left their home country due to the presence or threat of serious danger but who has asked not yet been recognised by the UK Government as a refugee. Asylum seekers are not sponsored via Community Sponsorship.
