Meredith here- Reset’s Training, Support and Advice Coordinator. I’m excited to announce that we’re making some changes to our training so that we can provide Community Sponsorship Groups with the support they need, when they need it!

To have an application approved by the Home Office, every Group is required to attend Reset training. For over a year, we’ve been training Groups in a full-day, in-person session which usually takes place after you’ve submitted your application to the Home Office and before you welcome a refugee family. Through these sessions, we’ve heard that there is a lot of information for you to take in, some of which comes too late in your Community Sponsorship journey.

This is how things will change:

To give you guidance as you begin to plan how you’ll support refugees and in order to share the practicalities of welcoming a family closer to their actual arrival, we’ve decided to split the required training into two parts:

  • Part 1: for Groups who are preparing their applications
  • Part 2: for Groups who have submitted their applications and are preparing to welcome a refugee family.

What will the two-part training look like?

Part 1 will be delivered as a one-hour webinar for the core members of your Community Sponsorship Group. By ‘core group’ we mean the leads within your Group, rather than wider befriending teams. In light of Covid-19 and the lockdown that has followed, we’ve all gotten comfortable communicating virtually, so we see this as the perfect time to shift part of our training online!

The webinar will cover topics including:

  • the refugee resettlement process
  • planning your support for a resettled family
  • key people in Community Sponsorship – including your Lead Sponsor,statutory services and how to get consent from your Local Authority/ies
  • understanding the application process.

We plan to run this webinar on a regular basis so your Group members can join whenever is convenient for them!

Part 2 will be delivered in person to your Community Sponsorship Group in a three-hour session after you’ve submitted your application. We’ll continue to travel around the UK (when it’s safe to do so!) to deliver this training. In Part 2, we’ll discuss:

  • taking an empowerment approach to resettlement
  • cultural awareness
  • setting boundaries
  • planning for the family’s arrival

Why are we doing this?

Since we began delivering optional in-person application workshops to Groups it’s become clear that many Groups want more structured support while planning their applications and it’s clear that Groups benefit from having structured training at the beginning of their Community Sponsorship journey as well as in the period leading up to welcoming a family.  We’ll still deliver application workshops for Groups who need them, as well as operating our application checking service.

We believe that splitting the training will make attending sessions more convenient for your Group members. After all, Community Sponsorship volunteers are busy people dedicating time to an amazing project! We also believe this will help you build momentum within your Group. We’ve all heard that for some groups, the application process has taken longer than the time for which you will support a family; Reset can help you create a plan for getting your application in to the Home Office in your own timelines.

You’ll be able to attend Part 1 of our training in your own home and choose which training date works best for your schedule. The second part of the training will only last for three hours instead of a full six-hour day as we delivered it before. This means that we’ll be able to deliver the training outside of normal working hours for Groups whose members are in full-time employment.

If you’ve already submitted your Community Sponsorship Application to the Home Office or attended our full training, you won’t need to attend the Part 1 webinar, just the Part 2 in-person training!
